26th Annual Coastal Cleanup Day Poised to Break Records this Saturday

San Diego’s largest volunteer event will remove litter from 85 sites countywide

 

San Diego, CA – More than 10,000 volunteers will unite across San Diego County this Saturday to beautify 85 sites along beaches, bays, canyons and waterways. Part of an international effort, volunteers in San Diego will remove trash from coastal and inland areas before it reaches the ocean where it threatens human health and marine wildlife. The event kicks off with a press conference at 9 a.m. at Rose Creek in Pacific Beach.

 

WHAT:                  Press conference for the 26th Annual Coastal Cleanup Day in San Diego County

 

WHEN:                  Saturday, September 25

Press conference begins at 9 a.m.

Coastal Cleanup Day runs from 9 a.m. – noon

 

WHERE:                Rose Creek inlet at Mission Bay High School, 2475 Grand Ave., San Diego 92109.

Parking is available in the staff and student parking lots on campus.  Look for directional signs into each lot.  Staging area is in the multi-purpose field on the northeast side of campus, adjacent to Rose Creek.

                               

Cleanups will occur simultaneously at 85 sites throughout San Diego County and 20 sites in Baja California. Please contact coordinators if you are interested in covering the event at another location.

 

WHO:                    Elected officials including Congresswoman Susan Davis

Co-coordinators San Diego Coastkeeper and I Love A Clean San Diego will present “Cleanup Champion” Awards to major sponsors including County Supervisor Greg Cox, Think Blue-City of San Diego Storm Water Department, Ralphs, Bank of America and Allied Waste Services.

 

WHY:                     Coastal Cleanup Day is the largest volunteer event in the state and is recognized in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest cleanup day effort in the world. Last year, more than 10,000 volunteers removed approximately 174,000 pounds of debris from outdoor areas in San Diego County alone. CALIFORNIA COASTAL CLEANUP DAY is a volunteer event 26 years in the making, with more communities, cities and counties joining every year. Through a partnership with California Coastal Commission and Ocean Conservancy, volunteers track types of debris found to compile and learn the sources of marine debris worldwide.
